NEW LICENSING REGIME FOR THE SECURITY INDUSTRY
2007 will see the introduction of major changes in the operation of security-related services in Scotland. This year Scotland will join England and Wales by introducing regulation of our private security industry and the result will be important changes, not just for security industry professionals, but also for the large number of firms who buy in security services, whether in the form of door supervision, security guards or cash and valuables in transit.
Essentially the new regulations, which are due to come into force in November 2007, will require operatives in these and other specified roles to hold a licence in order to carry out their work. This includes employees, managers, supervisors and directors or partners of security companies. An Approved Contractor Scheme will also operate for firms providing security services. Licensed operatives will be able to operate throughout the UK.
The aim of the new regulations is to ensure that firms can carry out and contract for security services with confidence, and the plans have met with wide approval. It is now essential that the security industry is aware of the imminent changes and that those firms who buy in services ensure that their service providers are geared up for the licensing regime.
