LOCAL EMPLOYER USES WORK TRIAL TO HOOK THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB
Local fishing tackle manufacturer Daiwa, based in Wishaw, has successfully recruited staff through Jobcentre Plus popular work trial programme.
Work trials allow jobseekers to try out a job with an employer for up to 15 days without any commitment to sign up permanently or the worry of losing benefits. It is entirely voluntary and there is no cost to either the employer or individual.
Jim Robert, who is the general manager at Daiwas Netherton plant said: By using work trials we at Daiwa are able to see the candidate actually performing the job. We can assess their suitability for the post by their commitment, time keeping and attitude. It allows an employer to go further than either an application form or job interview.
A recent success at Daiwa is Daniel Ferrier 19 from Motherwell. Daniel said: I was given the choice by the Jobcentre whether or not to go for the work trial as I have never done factory work before, but this is exactly what the work trial is all about. It allowed me to try the job first and I am glad I did, because I now have a job that I thoroughly enjoy.
Teresa McAteer a recruitment adviser for Motherwell Jobcentre said: A work trial is tailored to be flexible for up to 15 working days and brings together an employer with a job vacancy and an interested candidate. By taking part in a work trial the candidate has already shown commitment towards that employer and the employer has the opportunity to assess the candidate in the workplace. Daiwa has been very successful in recruiting and retaining staff from the work trial programme.
Another person to benefit from a work trial is Martyn Bell 22 from Wishaw who said: It lets you see if you like the job and lets the employer see if they like you, it also lets you see if you get on with the other people working there. It definitely is a good idea and better than just filling out an application form. It gives you the chance to prove yourself, which I did after only a three day work trial.
